History and Legacy
J.M. Hutton holds the distinction of being the oldest casket manufacturer in the United States, proudly operating in its original Richmond, Indiana location since its founding in 1845. Initially established as a sawmill, the company shifted to exclusively producing metal caskets from start to custom finish by 1940, marking a significant evolution in its operations.

Metal Casket Manufacturing
Since 1940, J.M. Hutton has specialized in the complete production of metal caskets, from initial fabrication to custom finishes, handles, and interiors. In 1985, the company acquired a large stamping plant equipped with hydraulic and mechanical presses ranging from 60 to 1,400 tons, along with an exclusive set of dies. This investment solidified Hutton’s position as one of the few independent metal casket manufacturers in the country.

Today, J.M. Hutton operates two state-of-the-art facilities totaling 250,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space in Richmond, Indiana. The company employs 131 local families and offers the following advanced capabilities:
